I’d rather tackle the birds and the bees.
“Mommy, your belly hurt?” I looked up at her from my prone position sprawled on the couch. “What?” Sprite came closed and lifted my shirt to look closer at my midsection. “Your belly is hurting?” Dinner was over. John was not yet home. I couldn’t catch a second wind and she seemed to be on her third. My head hit the cushion again. “No, sweetie. My belly is okay.” “Uh oh. You have a booboo.” My right hand scooted down to shoo hers away from my abdomen. “No, I don’t. Do you want to watch-” “Right here. A booboo. You need to go to the doctor.” “Sprite, I don’t have a booboo.” “Yes you do.” Her voice took on the same tone mine adopts when I’m trying to make her see things my way. But I wasn’t in the mood to play along. “Sprite, there’s nothing there.” She grabbed the hem and lifted my shirt once more to poke right above my abdomen. “You have a booboo.” Rolling my eyes, I felt the area and the telltale puncture in the skin. She had found the site of my past navel ring. “No, that’s not a booboo.”

Flesh and Bones Virtual Book Tour June and July 2011
Rusty MacLean raised his glass and said something that sounded like Slanjeh. To your health, old buddy. I hoisted my glass. Fuel in your bagpipes. He sipped at his Glenmorangie, while I swilled mine, letting it warm my throat. Damn good, but I wouldn’t admit it. No need to spoil my image as a throwback and relentlessly uncool, unhip, and out of it. I am so far behind the trends that sometimes I’m back in fashion, just like the Art Deco buildings in the very neighborhood where we now sat, drinking and swapping lies. I wore faded jeans, a T-shirt from a Key West oyster bar advising patrons to EAT EM RAW, and a nylon Penn State windbreaker. I thought I was underdressed until I saw a skinny guy in black silk pants, no shirt, and an open leather vest that couldn’t hide his navel ring, or his nipple ring. Rusty wore a black T-shirt under a double.

He also had an incongruously conservative, bootstrap-y streak. In Chinese restaurants, I knew to expect a lecture on how industrious ”Orientals” were. Then, he’d sloppily segue to telling me that I’d need to work harder and look more pulled together than my friends because I was black. Cheerleading and a navel ring would combine to transform me into a slut, so he forbade them with all the authority of an every-other-weekend parent who didn’t pay child support and didn’t have access to the cheerleading tryout schedule (none at all). My first boyfriend didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when my dad announced that he was in the ”Marin County Black Mafia” and that his ”people” were keeping an eye on things. I can scarcely remember a time before I decided to just humor my father. Before part of what I felt for him was pity.

Narcissistic feminism gone overboard: Venus de Moonlo, cover yourself!
If she was bothered by the tongue-wagging she would have stopped after the first dress and nude shorts pairing. Which is not to say that all this lasciviousness is Williams’s fault, but rather, like any woman who puts on very high heels or a sexy top, she likely feels the attention is a small price to pay for wearing what she wants, when she wants. Got it? It’s all about YOU, girl. You must REBEL! If you’re a self-made woman scratch that, if you’re a woman, you can damn well wear whatever you want because, well, because you can. For that job interview? I recommend a hot pink tube top and a leather mini with thigh high black boots. For picking up Susie from daycare, I recommend a thong bikini and strappy high-heeled sandals. For that business meeting, I recommend skin tight black trousers and a teasing half shirt (don’t forget the push-up bra and navel ring C and don’t worry about covering up that tattoo).

Jewels for the stars
Historically speaking, some 4000-5000 years ago body ornaments have been used in the attempt of people back then to make themselves appealing depending on their culture. Body piercing as well has been a practice in early civilizations. Even the Bible mentioned nose piercing. The Eqyptians wore navel rings in their various rituals. Some incorporates piercing as a religious ritual like tongue piercing for the Aztecs, Shamans, and the Mayans in Central America. Various tribes in Northwest America and in Africa still practice various kinds of body piercings. Piercing and body jewelry has been around for centuries. It was only in the 1960s and the 1970s that the practice became more of a form of rebellion and self-expression. Jim Ward and his piercing shop, The Gauntlet, are often referred to as the first ones who popularized piercing in the United States. If your Body Jewelry facts are out-of-date, how will that affect your actions and decisions?

Kenny Kenny
Kenneth Jay Lane is one of the most legendary costume jewelry designers alive, and was one of the first designers to make fake gems not only acceptable, but coveted and chic amongst fashionable ladies who traditionally favored fine jewels. In his long and illustrious career, he has dressed style icons ranging from Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn to Madonna and the Olsen twins. I’m pretty sure he’s served as both an inspiration and a reference point for every single costume jewelry designer who has ever worked in this industry, and I know that I have looked to his work on many occasions. YOOXVINTAGE is celebrating his designs with a special Kenneth Jay Lane sale , featuring rare vintage items from the designer’s archives, as well as classic pieces from his collection that are still in production. They have also put together a nice little video interview , where Lane describes his career trajectory in the setting of his very grand-looking apartment.

If you’re a woman who is fond of ordering necklaces and currently possesses quite a few, then it might be time for you to contemplate getting such a stand. My 5 favourite things
This past week has been a happy and busy one. Having had the past few weeks with the shadow of anxiety about my dad dissipate, I’ve seen and enjoyed everything in glorious technicolour as a result. I do know just how lucky we are believe me. So not even having a filthy cold has really dented my appreciation for things. And I wanted to share a few lovely things that would definitely rate as my favourite finds, meetings or discoveries this week. 1) The Eiffel Tower My husband immediate reaction was to pause when he entered our bedroom. Then he said very slowly: ‘What the hell is the Eiffel Tower doing in our bedroom?” It’s not actually THE Eiffel Tower. Obviously. But I found it in a shop the other day and its actually a jewellery stand. I’ve been looking for one for a while. This one quite literally spoke to me and told me to take it home with me. And so I did.

Blackrock Market in Cork
More pics at http://corkandabout.blogspot.com/ BLACKROCK MARKET It may be one of the smallest markets around but Sunday morning’s gathering in Blackrock is not without its fans. Some drive in, some stroll down, even spotted a pair roller skating to the venue today! And why not? It has a lovely riverside location and plenty of parking and space enough for the dozen or so stands that start opening for business around the 10.00am mark and stay there until 2.00pm. Despite the small number of stands, quite a lot is covered. Here you can get hot drinks (O’Connaill’s coffee and chocolate among them) and hot bites such as crepes. Then there are burritos and soups and more substantial food items like fish and bread. Even noticed a jewellery stand there. So, if you missed out on the bigger presentations like Mahon (Thursday) and Midleton (Saturday), then all is not lost and a visit to the bottom of the Marina and the fishing village of Blackrock could well save the day for you!

BCW 2: Finale
But then, Perwani has only recently forayed into women’s wear and while there is great confidence in what he designs for women’s prt wear, he appears to be faltering a bit with fashion’s biggest market: bridals. Yet he managed to create some trends that one could pick up on with his sheer self embossed churidaar; trailing crystal ball tassel and dhoti worn over a sherwani for a more rustic look for the groom. Following Perwani’s exhibit was BCW’s only jewellery show by Reem Abbasi of Keepsakes (attire for which was graciously provided by Amna Kardar) where she showcased an entire range of contemporary to traditional jewellery that hinted at the increasing popularity of polkis in bridal jewellery and stood out for it’s creative use of previous and semi precious stones with minimum use of gold. A malaa’ used as belly chain over a sari and a malaa’ created from strings of rubies received much adulation.

I have lots of little elements that I use in my art and I store some of the ones that I use a lot in little plastic bags grouped together with binder rings and then displayed on this metal jewellery stand. A metal storage basket holds some of my completed mini scrapbooks and more glass jars with findings. This bookcase holds some of my books, magazines and project samples. The drawer at the bottom contains a stash of my favourite antique children’s books that I recycle into dream journals My vintage drafting desk is my favourite piece in my office. I have a matching drafting stool for it but I like to stand when I work so I don’t use it very much. This desk is the perfect height for me to work without bending over and it’s large enough that and I can often work on a number of projects at one time like making glass tile earrings, scrabble tile charms for necklaces and some tin packages for another project.

Action in the trenches: a call for a more dynamic archaeology of early Byzantium
Action in the trenches: a call for a more dynamic archaeology of early Byzantium Action in the trenches: a call for a more dynamic archaeology of early Byzantium By Marlia Mango Paper given at the 21st International Congress of Byzantine Studies (2006) Introduction: The lecture considers the fragmented state of the archaeology of the late antique Eastern Empire. Evidence takes the form of several pictures. The first appears in Bryan Ward-Perkins’ recently published The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilization which includes a discussion of finds made at the royal ship burial of ca. 626 excavated at Sutton Hoo in this country. His photograph and discussion focuses on the natively made gold inlaid jewellery which represents artistic production at the highest levels of Anglo-Saxon society where at lower levels craftsmanship has plummeted in technical and aesthetic terms.

Ellis Cameron: art and self C hectic and eclectic
This week has been very different to the lovely calm of last week as, at the end of this week, we had to hand in for review all the work we had done so far at Glasgow School of Art. We were somewhat bombarded with this news on the Monday, as we thought the assessment wasn’t for another week or so. For the assessment we had to hand in all the projects we had done so far C meaning all the sketchbooks and the final pieces. We also had to pick one project and one final piece to put up on the wall beside all of the rest of our work. Alongside this, I was also given a new project brief, which focuses on creating a piece of jewellery that represents me. As this is such a broad brief I was a little bit wobbly under all the sudden pressure. So for the rest of the week I juggled starting the new brief with getting everything ready for assessment. It was a bit stressful, but I guess its just one of those things. For the new project I decided to look at what makes me me’ by looking at my personality.

Ellis Cameron: pelvic art beckons
This week started on a high note, as we received our feedback for the formative assessment I’ve mentioned in previous articles. I’d worked hard on all of the projects, but as I hadn’t had a formal assessment at GSA so far, I didn’t really know what I would get. I was very pleasantly surprised when I went for the feedback and was told I’d got an A’ Although it’s just a preliminary grade and it can still change before the year finishes, I was really chuffed as I’d put in a lot of work into each of the projects we’ve done so far. I am however, not resting on my laurels, as I would like to turn the predicted, preliminary grade into an actual one at the end of June. It was a busy day, as we also had our Critical Feedback for the project I have been working on for the past few weeks C designing a piece of jewellery that represents me. I’d spent last week finishing it and developing it towards a conclusion.
